Dentures Dentist

As a dentures dentist, we understand how critical replacing teeth can be.  Dentures have been around for a very long time due to the basic premise that people do not like to lose their teeth.. As folks get older, they start to run the risk of losing their teeth, with the majority of U.S. adults losing at least one tooth in their lifetime. This happens naturally due to age, bad hygiene habits, accidents, or disease. The challenges for people with missing teeth are quite serious. Teeth help us to chew our food, speak clearly and articulately, and they help with facial appearance. All of these are important to our patients, which is why so many people seek a way to have replacement teeth. Dentures can give you back a full mouth of teeth, restoring a way of life that you may have felt was lost.

The dentures we make today are a far cry from what they were in years passed. Today’s dentures are custom made, which means they are literally designed for your mouth. They look, feel, and even act like naturally occurring teeth. The fact that they are made with your specific measurements means there is a much slimmer chance of them falling out or slipping. You even have the opportunity to select what level of tooth replacement you want. If you have lost a few teeth, you can have a partial denture to replace just those. Or if you have lost more teeth and want a full denture, which covers the entire mouth, we can remove any remaining teeth and fit you with a comfortable full set of dentures. Both scenarios require preparation in order to ensure an accurate fit.

As a dentures dentist, we will schedule your preparation visit first, where you will undergo a very comprehensive examination to determine if there are any underlying issues that we need to resolve before getting the dentures created. Sometimes this can be as simple as excessive, flabby gum tissue that  needs to be removed prior to measuring for the dentures. Excessive gum tissue can make the dentures have less than an ideal fit, meaning they could slip. During this visit, we will take extensive x-rays and measurements, which will be used to create the dentures themselves. Next, we will take an impression of your gums so that the laboratory will have a life-size replica of your gums, allowing them to fabricate the perfect fitting dentures. Finally, we will discuss the shape, size, and color of the teeth that we will be using to replace your original ones.

The second stage in preparing for dentures is known as the CJR (central jaw relation), or the MMR (maximum mandibular retrusion) stage. During this stage, we will be making sure that the teeth are the right size and that they are aligned properly to make sure that you have no clicking when you talk or chew. This is done by using a loose-fitting denture base and wax rims, which simulate teeth. We will make adjustments and measurements until the alignment and size of the teeth are perfect before sending it off to the lab for primary fabrication.  Once the lab has completed the process, we will bring you in for a final fitting.  As a dentures dentist, our goal is to ensure that your replacement teeth are as comfortable as they can be.
